There Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Boomers

Did you know that one of the big hit’s of the boomer’s era was “There Ain’t Nobody Here but Us Chickens”? It seems appropriate given that we boomers are accused of being the selfish generation. We are also the largest segment of the four generations and this has caused certain boomer attitudes that can backfire in the workplace.

Just talk to anyone from the Generation X and Y generation and they roll their eyes with disdain at the fact that some of us boomers behave as if the whole world revolves around us. We all know that each generation has different value systems and these differences are causing interesting challenges in the workplace.

The boomer values are based on our upbringing and environment and we are the product of our veteran parents. Many of us boomers made early decisions that we would never be poor and that we would make sure our children had everything that we ourselves never had when we were a child.

As boomer adults we became two income households with increased income that allowed us to spend more than ever on things we feel we deserve now and to spoil our generation X and Y kids rotten.

One of the biggest boomer complaints about Gen X and Y is that they have a sense of entitlement. Well HELLO! Guess who caused them to become this way? WE DID!!!

We raised our children to believe in themselves, we told them they could be and do anything, we told them never to settle and to demand a promotion and to never accept the status quo.

So is it any surprise at all that the Gen X and Y show up for work, stand up tall and declare, “I am all that and more- now pay me what I am worth and don’t make me wait forever for a promotion”.

We baby boomers sit back with shock and disgust and think to ourselves, “You got to do the time before you get a promotion”. The reason we think this way is because that was our reality but it is not the reality for Gen X and Y in today’s market.

As we move forward it is obvious that boomers remain a crucial generation in regards to workplace success. We are the generation with working and on the job experience. However it isn’t all about us and the generations coming at us full force will definitely continue to challenge the status quo. So news flash to all of us boomers,

“There are a whole lot of us chickens and they are not just us boomers”.
