Love the Work You're With- How To Find Peace While You Work
It doesn't matter what you do for work, there are times when each of us feels like we have had enough. Tired, frustrated or just plain bored we begin to question our vocational choice. When I present to groups and in my books I talk about the power of choice and it's influence on our ability to maintain a positive state of mind.
There are three things you can do to get your 'mojo' back and your work life on track and they are:
1.If you are really unhappy right now with your job or the work environment it's time to do a reality check. Ask yourself the following questions:
- How did I get here?
- Did I WANT to do what I am doing for a living or did I just fall into this career or job out of necessity?
- What was I hoping to create or accomplish when I started?
- What are the 10 things I really enjoy about working here?
- What are the things I least enjoy about working here?
- Are the things I least enjoy ever going to change?
That last question is important because a lot of us get frustrated or depressed about things that are either never going to change (company policies) or if they do change it is going to take a long time (company culture).
2. Once we have asked ourselves the above questions the next stage is to own our choices. None of us are forced to work where we work, we are there by choice. Our choices may be based on the basic needs of money, proximity to home, schedule works with children's schedule etc. The point is, it's time to really own the choices that brought us to where we are. From this point positive changes can be made.
3. Take positive action that is focused on the future and solutions. There is no energy when we focus on the past and the problem. When we consistently tell ourselves things like, "Oh what's the use, nothing is ever going to change around here" we are programming our subconcious to feel even more powerless and so the cycle of unhappiness is perpetuated. Instead learn to catch yourself when you begin to enter the drama of 'how awful things are' and turn it around to accepting the current situation and planning to make things better for the future. For example you may realize that you have outgrown your job and you are no longer challenged, rather than complain about the lack of promotion opportunities instead use your creativity and resources to plan to make it better. Take courses or sign up for a degree program, hire a personal coach to help you develop a career plan or take a vacation to give deep thought to what you would rather be doing. The point is the only person who can give you what you need in regards to being happy at work is yourself. The great news is that your choices to improve it are endless.
