Cheryl's Quick Tip: Get Motivated to Have the Best Year Ever

Here are my quick tips for starting 2006 off with a great big bang:

  • Take the time to reflect on the past year and what you have accomplished many of us are focused on the future and may overlook the process or what we have already accomplished.
  • Write down 5 things you are proud of that occurred in 2005 (personal and professional).
  • Plan to do something that you always said you would do but have never actually followed through previously. I am signing up to take oil painting classes next week! I have had it on my list of goals for over ten years that I wanted to paint and I never followed through- well it’s now or never!
  • Stop being a type A and start being a type Z- I have made up a new ‘type’- type Z is someone who has a Zen approach to their life- balance in work, family and self. When I say balance I mean feeling like each segment of your life is getting a fair amount of attention. I am proud to be working towards a type Z.
  • Be bold---this is the year to risk so that we can enjoy the rewards. Risks can be big or small but they really do provide us with energy and challenge our emotional foundation---it’s good to be afraid and it’s good to be exhilarated. Hire a coach to help you.
  • Love large- choose 2006 to be the year that you love largely - put aside petty temperamental responses and instead reframe and retrain yourself to respond with patience and tolerance. Don’t wait for others to be nice first, to smile first or to be considerate first.
  • Pay it forward and watch people respond to you with more love and congeniality than you have ever experienced. Enjoy the year!

Question of the month: How can I engage someone who is a lone wolf and always wants to do things alone and with lots of control?

Answer: There is power in more than one. I can relate to the lone wolf worker as I used to be one myself. Often the personality type of a lone wolf who wants lots of control is that of a Driver/Detailer (find out more about these in my book “Say What You Mean”- click here to order)

The driver personality likes autonomy, power and recognition and the detailer aspect wants perfection. Often this type of person doesn’t think anyone else will do as good a job as they will and they also don’t want to ‘baby-sit’ others on a project.

Since TEAM is such a huge component of business today it can be a real challenge for leaders to deal with this type of team member. In my experience the best way to engage this type of person is to appeal to their ego. Have a conversation with them about the need to share their skill set and expertise with other team members- speak to their potential within the department or company and to the fact that the company rewards and recognizes strong team players. Coach them on how to still be able to gain recognition through the team versus just for themselves and lastly allow them control to run the project while still involving the team and being committed to a team success. Be aware that as a leader you may have enabled this type of person by recognizing their lone efforts- remember what gets rewarded gets repeated.

Next month: The Power of More Than One….Partnering for Increased Success.
