Issue: March 2006

Exciting News!

Watch for DVD and Audio CD’s on leadership from Cheryl Cran in April 2006!

Cheryl's Quick Tip: Use the Generational Perspective

As leaders and communicators we often feel as if we need a degree in psychology when dealing with our diverse teams. I have to say that it wouldn’t hurt! The best leaders have learned to understand people in general at the highest level possible. Master leaders ask themselves questions like:

  • "What would cause an individual to behave in that specific way in this specific incident?”
  • “How can I communicate in a way that this person will ‘get it’ in their own way of understanding?”

A further component is the generational aspect. Everyone has their own unique personality and communication style and we also have to take into consideration their generational values. The next time you are interacting with someone make note of the possible generational perspective they may be operating from. Allow yourself to remain open and willing to listen to their unique position and let it help you to understand how they could be seeing the situation from their generational perspective.

Quote of the Month: “You see, real ongoing, lifelong education doesn’t answer questions; it provokes them.”- Luci Swindoll

March's Article: The Difference between Being a Manager and an Executive

I know why there aren’t more women in executive roles. In my opinion and experience many women have the natural abilities to manage such as being able to build relationships and to have empathy. However being an executive requires a shift in leadership thinking and behaviors which for a lot of women can be a very real challenge. Click here for full article

Question of the month: I am a woman in a predominantly male environment and industry---how can I improve my communication so that I can get better results with my fellow workers?

Answer: Great question! I love that you are not whining or feeling like a victim because of your work environment. Here’s what I have learned about communicating with our male counterparts; they are practical and fact based and enjoy a sense of humor. Not to say that women aren’t all of these things but I love that most men want their information in a direct and non-emotional format. Women who work successfully with men have learned the fine balance of remaining confident in their abilities while communicating very directly and factually. So one clear tip on communicating with men: Figure out what you want to say and say it in one or two sentences, don’t apologize for what you are saying and keep your voice tone even and of medium volume. There you have it—give it a go.
