Cheryl's Quick Tip - Customize When You Recognize - Tips for Leaders

Great leaders realize that every person on their team is a unique individual, and although we encourage team work there is no team without individuals making up that team. Employee recognition is an important component of employee retention and satisfaction and it is potent when leaders customize when they recognize. Take the time to find out what specifically each of your employees would like for their own individual rewards or recognition.

Years ago when I worked in finance and prior to being self employed I had a boss who wanted to recognize my extra effort in reaching the targets established for our department. He knew I loved golf and so I walked into my office one day to find a round of golf for two, a new putter and a day off of my choice to go golfing. Talk about a huge impact! Not only did he personalize the reward but he made it substantial enough that it made an impact both practically and emotionally.

The result was that I felt validated for the going the extra mile and it also deepened my commitment to continuing to work hard. Not every organization has the budget for these types of things but as a leader you can creatively come up with ways to customize when you recognize. It pays off huge in employee recognition and retention.

Time to Kick It up A Notch- Play Bigger for Better Results

There are many defining moments in our lives and some of them can become positive memory implants. On the other hand there may be implants we embedded in our psyche that do not support us and we have anchored them subconsciously or without awareness. For example the positive implant of working hard and seeing the results has served me well but the subconscious implant I received was that I could never relax and in order to feel valued I had to continue to work really hard.
